Hormones drive many of the processes and changes that occur within a woman's body, so it is important to understand their critical role. Hormones are chemical messengers and instigators that are produced by various organs and body tissues and then transported by the bloodstream to the cells and other organs. The hormones involved in regulating the menstrual/ ovulatory cycle are Oestrogen, Progesterone, Luteinising Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). The levels of these hormones are low in childhood, increase during the reproductive years and lower again after menopause.
